how they are made : the process (in progress)
| The process begins when I
purchase standing timber and have it sawn to my specs at an Amish
sawmill. |
| The rough planks are planed
so I can better see the grain and what it may have to offer as a design
element. After that decision is made, the plank is cut
accordingly - figured and special feature wood is blocked-out for lids
and the straight grain cut-offs are used for sides. |
| The process continues with
stacking the lumber with stick spacers and allowing the pile to air
dry for one year for each inch of plank thickness ( 2" thk. means two
years' of waiting). After air drying, the planks are unstacked
in the field and re-stacked in my passive- solar- powered drying kiln.
Drying in the kiln takes about one to two months during summer and much longer
during the winter. |
